The Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) establishes many cutoff classes for outdoor luminaires, each with distinct photometric requirements. Two relevant zones are established with regard to a luminaire's nadir (the nadir is defined as the angle that points straight below, or 0°, from the luminaire) for these classes. The first zone applies to all angles at or above 80° above the nadir, whereas the second zone applies to all angles at or above 90° above the nadir, or above the horizontal plane of the luminaire. Light released between 80° and 90° is more likely to contribute to glare, but the light emitted above the horizontal contributes more to the sky glow. The definitions of the four IESNA classes are as follows (IESNA 2000):
Full cutoff—The luminous intensity (in candelas) at or above an angle of 90 degrees above nadir is zero, and the luminous intensity (in candelas) at or above an angle of 80 degrees above nadir does not exceed 10 percent of the luminous flux (in lumens) of the light or lamps in the luminaire.
The luminous intensity (in candelas) at or above a vertical angle of 90° above nadir shall not exceed 2.5% of the luminous flux (in lumens) of the lamp or lamps in the luminaire, and the luminous intensity (in candelas) at or above a vertical angle of 80° above nadir shall not exceed 10% of the luminous flux (in lumens) of the lamp or lamps in the luminaire.
The luminous intensity (in candelas) at or above a vertical angle of 90° above nadir does not exceed 5 percent of the luminous flux (in lumens) of the lamp or lamps in the luminaire, and the luminous intensity (in candelas) at or above a vertical angle of 80° above nadir does not exceed 20 percent of the luminous flux (in lumens) of the lamp or lamps in the luminaire.
Non-cutoff—There is no candela restriction in the zone above maximum candela.
What is the significance of illumination homogeneity when comparing LED street lights to traditional street lights? Good uniformity indicates that there are no bright patches on the road's surface and that the light is dispersed uniformly throughout the whole road's surface. If the lighting pattern is excessively erratic, it will disturb road users, particularly motorists. According to studies, LED street lights may offer light that is as uniform as natural sunshine, hence reducing driver fatigue. They can substantially increase road safety. In order to improve uniformity, LED street light bulbs have been supplied with an asymmetric optical lens that provides rectangular lighting rather than circular. This configuration may decrease the erratic overlapping of street lights.
Another issue is heat dissipation. Inadequate heat dissipation will reduce the lifespan of the LED street lights, which are intended to function for an extended length of time.
