In a smart city, intelligent street lighting is public street lighting that reacts to the movement of people, bikes, and automobiles. Also known as adaptive street lighting, it brightens when activity is detected and dims otherwise. This differs from standard fixed lighting and timer-controlled lighting.
A smart street light system consists of a cluster of streetlight bulbs that are capable of communicating with one another and transmitting illumination data to a local concentrator. The concentrator controls and sends pertinent data to a secure server, which gathers and displays the data through a web browser dashboard.
A smart street lighting system also includes two-way communication, which is the system's frosting on the cake. It enables facility managers to remotely operate street lights and monitor the power usage of the lamps and drive circuits. Monitored street light networks save maintenance expenses since each lamp has a unique identifier and can be localized. Therefore, if a street light breaks, falls, or malfunctions in any way, repair may be arranged in an efficient, cost-effective, and timely manner.
Even more impressively, if the night is brilliantly lighted by the moon, for instance, smart street lighting ensures lower energy use by remotely reducing or intensifying the lights. This may also be done based on meteorological conditions, such as fog or rain. Also ensured is the efficient gathering of data, which city planners may employ to extend light systems as cities develop.
The fundamental element of a smart street lighting system is the intelligent lamppost, which consists of the following three elements:
1. The most energy-efficient LED street lighting
2. IoT-based communication for the development of a digitally monitored, secure, and dependable network.
3. Addition of several intelligent sensors to monitor weather conditions, lamppost tilt, air pollution, etc.
LED Intelligent street lighting must provide specified values of brightness, dimness, uniformity, and glare based on the kind of road in order to provide vehicles and pedestrians with the highest level of visual safety. High-performance luminous sources, such as High-Intensity Discharge (HID) lamps and LEDs lamps, are used for this purpose. These energy-efficient lighting devices feature longer bulb lives and reduced energy usage compared to conventional lighting. The actual intelligence of these lamp solutions is based on a digital method in which a microcontroller manages all the tasks required for an efficient and well-functioning lamp, as well as all the data required to establish a smart street lighting network.
IoT-based communication — Networked street lighting systems may be administered using a variety of established communication protocols. The connectivity is bidirectional, so the monitored system may both transmit and receive data and orders from and to the light. The manner in which a facility manager chooses, for instance, how much to dim light, relies on a variety of factors, such as the weather, the lamp's inclination, the proximity of people, the road conditions, the time of day, and more. This information may be gathered by cluster and sent to a central service center, where the data is monitored and appropriate action is performed.
Smart Sensors — As discussed before, smart sensors may be utilized to monitor real-time changes in information such as lamp tilt, weather conditions, air pollution, natural light availability, and more. This data may improve road safety and save maintenance expenses.
