FAQ

How did smart street lamps come to be?

Greek and Roman cultures used early lights when the light was largely employed for security. From candle lamps, which needed a lamplighter to tour the city at dark and light each lamp, through oil and gas lamp illumination, to incandescent lights, and then to high-intensity discharge and LED lamps, public lighting has seen a constant development and functional improvement. The transition from gasoline or diesel to electricity constituted a significant and much-needed transformation in daily living.

In the meanwhile, the Internet has grown ubiquitous, advancing from PC to mobile connections and adapting to almost every form of device. Narrowband replaced broadband, allowing smaller messages to be sent without wasting energy or resources. This growth paved the way for the Internet of Things, where gadgets of all shapes and sizes can connect and interact with one another.

In the context of technical improvements, public lighting has evolved accordingly. LED bulbs are no longer standalone components of lighting installations, but rather are integrated into increasingly complicated intelligent lighting infrastructures. Intelligent streetlight controllers allow for individual lamp control, while communication and Internet of Things technologies connect devices and street lighting management software. Consequently, lighting fixtures are now equipped with intelligent capabilities and are part of the connected lighting revolution, paving the path for smart cities.

What are the functionalities and benefits of smart streetlights?

Unlike conventional lamps, which can only be switched on and off collectively, each smart streetlight may be individually controlled.

How could this be?

By placing intelligent controls on each light (segment control also exists, but is not the focus of this article). Controllers for streetlights may be put inside the lamp by the manufacturer or mounted on the lamp by an integrator. Municipalities have access to intelligent features such as autonomous operation, smart scheduling, dimming, parameter measurements, and failure warnings, in addition to the remote on/off function.

The most significant advantage of individually controlled smart lighting is information availability. Using real-time data analysis, grid awareness enables you to make smart, educated judgments. Other advantages include:

1. energy conservation

2. reduced upkeep expenses

3. greater community contentment

How can controllers be installed on smart lamps?

There are several methods for connecting luminaire controllers to smart streetlights. First, it is essential to understand that you may choose to purchase new lights or discover a solution that is compatible with the existing fixtures. Second, you must distinguish between the numerous socket types and mounting choices offered.

Wire connections can be used to attach smart streetlamp controllers

This is the most versatile method since controllers may be wired to the lamp's power source and put anywhere on the lamp or street lighting pole. It is mostly used for retrofitting since you can utilize the existing infrastructure to link smart controllers, making deployment very quick and cost-effective: because you are upgrading the existing streetlights, there are no bulb investments and nearly no public works required.

Caution is advised, since you may only be able to connect the controller to the pole and not the bulb. Additionally, older bulbs may lack DALI interfaces. This implies that the dimming option may no longer be accessible since communication must occur directly with the ballast for dimming orders to be received. Other intelligent features will remain unaffected.

Check the following to ensure that the controller can be connected to the light and that it enables dimming:

1. The lamp features an electronic ballast compatible with 0-10, DALI, and DALI2 interfaces (dedicated protocols for digital lighting control)

2. The light itself is dimmable.

3. The controller is capable of dimming

Street lighting standardized plug-and-play connectors

There have been major expenditures and attempts in standardizing lamp connections due to the importance of intelligent control to all industry players in outdoor lighting. The primary objective is to simplify lamp replacement and lighting controller installation. For example, standardized connections such as NEMA or Zhaga have plug-and-play mounting choices that make controller installation a few-second process, hence minimizing deployment costs.

Using standardized connections enables the installation of controllers on any light, provided that the controller is compatible with the lamp socket. Utilizing streetlights with such connections provides all the benefits of intelligent lighting management and enables any future improvements.

Smart street lamps with embedded controllers

If you need to install smart street lighting while preserving the architectural integrity of the lamps (such as in historic districts), embedded controllers may be the best option. Having a NEMA or Zhaga controller placed on the lamp is not always possible, but you still want the advantages of a smart, fully integrated lighting system.

Embedded controllers are designed to be very compact in order to fit inside the luminaire. In this manner, you prioritize aesthetics while retaining the benefit of a smart and integrated street lighting grid. If you are a smart lighting integrator or lighting service provider, you likely have the technical ability to attempt to combine the two devices yourself. However, embedded controllers are often pre-installed inside the lamp during manufacturing.

Others choose to connect third-party systems with their products, while other lamp manufacturers have built their own control solutions (with some even choosing closed, proprietary solutions). If you intend for flexibility and want to prevent supplier lock-in, the crucial distinction is not the control system provider, but rather the interoperability of the solution. For future smart lighting or smart city initiatives, only open control solutions (open standard communications, API connection availability, or TALQ/TALQ2 compatibility) will provide supplier choice.
