A surge protector (also known as a spike suppressor, surge suppressor, surge diverter,[1] surge protection device (SPD), or transient voltage surge suppressor (TVSS)) is a device or appliance that protects electrical equipment against voltage spikes in alternating current (AC) circuits. A voltage spike is a transient occurrence that may reach above 1,000 volts and lasts 1 to 30 microseconds. Lightning may generate a spike in voltage of over 100,000 volts, which can burn through the wire insulation and cause fires, but even small spikes can harm a broad range of electrical items, including computers, battery chargers, modems, and televisions. Surge devices typically activate at a preset voltage, usually 3 to 4 times the mains voltage, and redirect electricity to earth. The surge may be absorbed by certain gadgets and released as heat. They are often assessed in terms of the amount of energy they can absorb in joules.
Because of four qualities, LED technology has become the standard for lighting: efficiency, adaptability, energy savings, and longer life.
Despite these advantages, the technology has some disadvantages, including higher implementation costs (initial investment) and internal electronics (LED optics and drivers) that are much more sophisticated and susceptible to overvoltages than conventional light sources.
For these reasons, using overvoltage protection systems is a highly cost-effective investment, as it extends the life of the luminaires, assures the cost-effectiveness (ROI) of LED projects, and lowers maintenance and replacement expenses.
The innate immunity of the luminaire is supplemented with a surge protection device (SPD) linked upstream of the driver, providing far more strong protection against the impacts of lightning and overvoltages.
Even though the installation is simple and the LED driver has a built-in surge protector, it's a good idea to utilize an external surge protector that you can quickly change. This extra surge protector can often resist 10,000kV or more and can manage numerous incidents.
