LED street lights are street lights that use LED technology. LED street lights are integrated light-emitting diodes used as street lighting fixtures. There are now more options than simple metal halide and sodium or mercury bulbs.
LED street lights are not only popular on the street, but they are also very popular as LED parking lot lights in places like retail or car dealerships because they look beautiful. But why are LED lights so popular and preferred by many over older street light designs such as metal halide, sodium, and mercury bulbs that were traditionally used for street lighting purposes? There are many reasons for this.
1. more energy efficient - newer models use 40-60% less energy than their metal halide equivalents
2. Longer lifespan - 20-year lifespan ensures fewer bulb replacements and reduced costs
3. improved light - LED lamps tend to have cleaner light with no flicker, zebra stripes, or other problems.
4. Smaller size - LED fixtures are often much smaller, easier to install, and more aesthetically pleasing.
Compared to the approximately 2000 K color temperature offered by high-pressure sodium or other E39 LED bulbs, LEDs offer a wider range of color temperatures, including 6000 K cool white or 5000 K bright white. The brighter colors make them safer on the street and easier on the eyes. However, the American Medical Association or AMA recommends that people not use LED streetlights with color temperatures above 5700K because LED lights have a concentrated blue component that can produce glare and cause people's pupils to constrict. Mimicking daylight is said to interfere with the production of melatonin, which is needed for normal sleep.
