SMD stands for Surface mounted diode, whereas COB and DOB stand for Chip on Board and Driver on Board, respectively. DOB is a technique that eliminates the need for a separate power source. Voltage rectification and stepping down are performed via printed circuits on the chip. DOB is gaining popularity as the globe searches for less expensive lighting options. DOB technology has an inherent difficulty with flickering. We do not sell any items using this technology.
SMD is a method that installs several tiny chips on a PCB. To power up each SMD, a separate power line is supplied to it. SMD are comparatively brighter as a chip but need a substantial increase in surface area to accommodate additional chips. Consequently, the luminance density is not even close to a COB. In an SMD configuration, each chip has its own connection; hence, the likelihood of individual chip failure in luminaires is increased. To power an SMD luminaire, a driver is necessary.
A COB chip is a highly dense chip composed of numerous chips adhered directly to an aluminum or silica substrate. The substrate has a significant influence on heat dissipation. COB chips need connection at just two locations, reducing the likelihood of failure. A much higher luminance density makes the light more appealing and often produces more attractive light. A driver is required to activate a COB light.
If the lighting application is well planned, the use of LEDs does not increase light pollution. Contrariwise, when well-designed LED street lights are used, it is possible to efficiently regulate dispersion and glare while having a significantly higher effect on minimizing high-angle brightness and light pollution.
