A decent tunnel lighting system allows the driver to adjust to the light within the tunnel at the entry. Providing appropriate illumination throughout the tunnel promotes a safe driving environment. The motorist must enter the tunnel without causing any damage, travel through it, and escape it safely.
Generally used for transition and interior zones in long tunnels, and for all zones in small tunnels or low-speed tunnels. In one-way tunnels, asymmetrical lighting may also be used to reinforce the brightness level.
Tunnel illumination is required to address the issue of the tunnel's atmosphere abruptly adapting. The adaptation of the inside and outside brightness for the person entering or departing the tunnel must be balanced. This design is based on the tunnel's critical length.
